Common MOT Failures

Tyres 8%
Brakes 10%
Suspension 13%
Light & Indicators 19%

  • Bodywork

We check your vehicle for excessive corrosion or damage to the bodywork or structure – if there are any repairs they should be done correctly and safely. If a towbar is fitted we check that to ensure it is secure and working correctly. We also check the bonnet to ensure it fastens securely.

  • Brakes

We check your vehicle’s front and rear brakes using a rolling road brake tester. This measures the braking efficiency of each wheel to highlight any dangerous imbalances and that brakes are working to their full effect.

  • Doors

We check all doors (which also includes the boot) to ensure they open and close correctly. Front doors should open from both inside and out, whereas rear doors just have to open from outside.

  • Electrical

We check all visible wiring to ensure it is in good condition and doesn’t show any signs of wear. We also check the battery to ensure it is securely fitted and isn’t leaking.

  • Exhaust System and Emissions

We check the entire exhaust system to make sure it is secure, there are no leaks and isn’t excessively noisy.

We also perform an emissions check to make sure your vehicle is performing within the regulations.

  • Fuel System

We check that your fuel system doesn’t have any leaks and that all pipes are in good condition. We also check that the fuel flap fastens correctly and securely.

  • Horn

We check that the horn is working correctly.

  • Registration Plates

We check the registration plates are fitted, are the correct colour and easily readable. The letter and number spacing must match the MOT guidelines.

  • Lights

The MOT tester will check that all lights operate correctly including front/rear indicators, front sidelights, front headlights, rear lights and rear fog lights.

The aim of the headlights is also checked, which makes sure you’re not dazzling oncoming vehicles!

  • Mirrors

We check the wing mirrors and rearview mirror to ensure they are secure and aren’t damaged or have any other defect that adversely affects them.

  • Seats and Seatbelts

We check that all seats are secure and fasten securely in the upright position, and that the drivers seat can be adjusted.

All seatbelts are checked for their condition, checking for any rips or tears, and that they are securely fastened to the vehicle body.

  • Steering and Suspension

The MOT tester will check the steering functions correctly and doesn’t have any loose joints.

Suspension components are checked to ensure they are not worn, and don’t have any visible leaks.

  • Wheels and Tyres

Wheels are checked to make sure they are secure.

Tyres are checked for any visible damage, that the tread depth is over the minimum depth and that tyre sizes are correct for the vehicle.

If your car was manufactured after 2012 and has Tire Pressure Monitors (TPMS) fitted then the MOT tester will check that the warning light is working correctly.

  • Wipers and Washers

Wipers are checked to ensure they clean the windscreen and that they are in good general condition.

Washers are checked to make sure they point in the correct location and effectively clear the windsreen. Pipes are checked to make sure they don’t leak or show any signs of wear.

  • Windscreen

The windscreen is checked for any large chips or cracks that might affect your view of the road.

Anything fixed to the windscreen (such as sat navs, phone holders, dash cams etc) must be removed prior to the test to ensure they don’t obstruct the drivers view.

  • Vehicle Identification Number

The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) will be checked to ensure it is present and readable.
